A Little Weather Excitement

We had a major blizzard this past Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We had 25 cm ( 10 in ) of snow and lots of wind. The temperature gradually dropped to minus 20 C (plus 3 F).

Needless to say I had lots of snow to shovel. I good neighbor came with his snow blower and really helped me. It was drifted in the next morning so I shoveled. Cars were getting stuck on my street. Monday afternoon the storm was about done.

We have had 65 cm of snow this winter so far. Most winters we don't get even close to this amount of snow.

Because there was wind we had snowdrifts. We rarely get snow drifts. So the wind made some great carvings for us.

The little old wishing well has a full load

There's a canoe under that snow bank.

It's a good thing I put a roof on the bird feeder

A nice snow carving on a roof edge

A full load of snow on another garage

  1. I usually watch CBCNN when working out in the morning. They have been highlighting your weather challenges out west! Oh my! You be careful digging out! I tend to barrel outdoors and attack it, but I am learning to take it easy. Being retired, there is no rush!

    1. I'm a lucky boy as I don't have health problems I have to worry about. On the other hand I don't get silly about shoveling. We got 25 cm of snow here this weekend.

  2. You'd have to build strong outdoors. My pathetic carpentry skills on a bird feeder would be crushed by that weight of snow!

    1. Well, this one could collapse too. My engineering skill is very limited.

    1. We usually don't get this much snow in a whole winter so it's a bit of a shock.

  4. WOW! That's a lot of snow! Then add the wind? yikes! Snow drifts are amazing to see. Its really cool when the wind whips the snow up the bluffs and the snow looks like it hags in mid air. Stay warm my friend!

    1. Yes I've spent much time in the Rockies. The snow blows off a ridge and puts on quite a show. Ground drift out on the open prairie is also quite a sight.

  5. Oh, it is like looking into the future and seeing what is around the corner. And I suppose you will be doing your usual trick of sending all that weather in this direction! Time to search my snow boots out

    1. Even if it gets cold sometimes , we still have a good winter. I skate once a week and cross country ski as much as I can get in.

  7. Close the door up there you are sending way to much cold air this way. Your snow is prettier than ours. I am tired of shoveling :(

    1. I will have to plead guilty to sending the rotten weather. DJan sent the weather from the west coast. You'll have to blame DJan

  8. Wow.. did you ever get hit! That's a lot of white stuff. Way more than I"d like to shovel.

  10. Wow. That is a lot of snow. Last winter we didn't get the usual amount and as a consequence our septic line froze up. Not good...:(

    1. This is a huge amount of snow for us. Some years we get very little snow and lots of times have a brown Christmas.

  11. Red it's been a crazy making amount of snow here in the city as well, and COLD! This past 4 days it was averaging -30 or worse with wind chills. I'm hoping we get a bit of a break now, enough cold already! I like your photos, I must say that all the snow makes for a beautiful shot, but I'd rather just see it in photos! lol Have a wonderful day!

  13. I don't know WHY you blame me for your weather woes, Red. I guess we are getting ready now to change from cold to warm and rain. I'll take it, as I'm tired of being so cold. :-0

    1. I'm only going by what the weather guy says. It's a low pressure system that comes from the west coast and twirls around so that we get an east wind and the air rises because of our mountains. Are you still with me?
